You might have heard some people say ‘hey, that’s an amateur or that's a pro skater´ and don’t know the real difference between them both or what it really means in the skateboarding community. Well, in this article you will get a clearer vision of what it really means to be an amateur skater and the things you can achieve being one of them.

You may see a lot of skaters that are listed as amateurs by their sponsors or sponsoring companies. Some of these skaters stay as amateurs and continue to advertise themselves as that, keeping their participations to amateur events. There was a time when the top professional skaters were the ones that dominate demos, get paid, travel the world, and appear in the latest skate news. But not any more. A lot of the top amateur skaters today are living the life, closing the gap betweeen an am and a pro more than ever.

Technically, if an amateur get’s paid they are like pro skaters that are only missing the board and the signature shoe. They don’t have those things but they still can enter pro contests. So as you see, being an am isn't that bad after all. The pro teams also have an amateur team, skaters that start to participate in contests, develop and stay ready to make the next step when the team see they are ready.
