There are many, probably hundreds or even thousands of brands out there related to skateboarding, but there are signature brands that stand out for several reasons! Quality, variety, and most importantly, the contribution they had in the community and the impact in skateboarding history! Here we have featured are a few of them, these brands have become almost statements for being the precursors of the skateboarding culture as we know it now, those who shaped the entire industry and most importantly, promoted the skateboarding culture across the globe!
The list could be endless so we narrowed it down to the most important ones in our book, let’s check them out!
#5. Birdhouse Skateboards
In 1992, professional skateboarders Tony Hawk and Per Welinder got together to create one of the most important brands in the industry as of today, with an extensive catalog of skateboarding gear, apparel, accessories, and even a skateboarding video producer, this is definitely one of the main brands one tends to have in mind when thinking of the best skateboarding brands.
Top-notch quality is what these guys are known for but one of the biggest contributions is the skateboarding videos these guys have released over the years from Feasters (1992) until Saturdays (2017) having dudes like Eric Koston, Bucky Lasek, Aaron Homoki to display their skills on camera for our delight.
Hawk being the current frontman of this machine, has become one of the most prominent figures in the industry for being one of those dudes whose main goal is to make the world a better place through skateboarding.
#4. Independent Trucks
Founded in 1978 in sunny California, the brand is one of the best and longest-standing skateboarding companies out there, and its currently the only company fully dedicated to the development and improvement of skateboarding trucks of the United States!
Richard Novak, Jay Shiurman, Fausto Vitello, and Eric Swenson developed the first Stage 1 model on May 23, 1978, a product that completely revolutionized the skateboarding industry at the time, since it was lacking of companies that developed quality trucks for heavy use, most trucks at the time were designed exclusively for cruising and got bent or even broken after riding them and trying a few flip tricks or heavy drops.
As you can see, with the help of these dudes, skateboarding was opened a whole new branch of possibilities when it comes to speed and even endurance of trucks with the capacity to handle “heavy-duty” skating, that caused the imminent evolution of skateboarding.
The list of pros involved with independent as their favorite truck choice is almost endless, and proves that these guys not only made history but also helped develop skateboarding as we know it today!
#3. Bones Wheels
Along with the previous brands, Bones helped develop and literally shape what we know now as the “regular” skateboarding wheel, with numerous experiments since its foundation in 1977 by George Powell, whose team solidly dedicated to developing a unique compound (MDI diphenylmethane diisocyanate) to create the mixture of a hard solid white color wheel (which eventually gave it its name) that was the first of its kind.
This changed the game forever! Along with other signature features that eventually led to other manufacturers to adapt their own wheels making BONES wheels the industry standard!
Meaning the wheels performed so good! And appealed to a whole new generation of skaters that had different needs that were not met by the old school transparent plastic wheels now used in cruisers. The industry HAD to adapt to this design to be able to keep up with the consumers’ demands.
Another milestone in skateboarding that changed the game for good! And they did not stop there, the company has continued to develop more “formulas” that have the wheels currently positioned as the overall BEST WHEELS in the market.
Arguably one of the first-ever “skateboarding brands” out there, the influence VANS has had in the industry is HUGE, from coming up with what could be considered the first skateboarding shoe, the #44, which is now referred to as “the Authentic” to develop technologies specifically designed to skateboarding shoes that have been replicated by almost every other shoe company in the industry, and creating the first “signature shoe” The Vans Steve Caballero, which caused a revolution in the entire industry, getting your own shoe, became a dream for skateboarders all over the world.
Once this happens, you can really tell you have made it.
The creation and promotion of skateboarding events is also one of the main reasons VANS should be located among the most influential brands out there, we could go on with this for days, but we are pretty sure you get the point!
You can basically find any product and accessory with the VANS logo, but they have built for over 50 years a certain aesthetic and feel that no other brand has ever been able to replicate and something that we feel particularly difficult to accomplish or even attempt!
