Rodney Mullen Reacts to the New THPS 1+2

By Valentina Diaz
V. Diaz, a journalist and passionate skateboarder is a full-time writer for SHIT®️ Magazine.

In 1999, Tony Hawk Pro Skater was the first skateboarding experience to come into form in the video game industry. This first step brought an enormous development among gamers and skaters. Since then both worlds, the skating and non-skating crowd, have learned more about what skateboarding is.

THPS is out and to the entire team that belongs to this amazing project, this has been the moment that they were waiting for all year. It's a repeat season of sharing with a new generation of kids what the pro skaters felt when they were young and played this game for the first time.

As a result of an amazing process, this game brought the best pro skaters of all times like Lizzie Armanto, Leticia Bufoni, Nyjah Huston, Steve Caballero, Shane O’Neill, Geoff Rowley, Bob Burnquist, Rodney Mullen, Eric Koston, Chad Muska, Andrew Reynolds, Elissa Steamer, Aori Nishimura, Kareem Campbell, Rune Glifberg, and even the iconic Jamie Thomas.

Reacting to This New Version

Leo Baker, who used to play the game with his friends before going out skating said that “It’s really cool that they’re showcasing a variety of different skateboarders that highlight women and me as a queer skater. I think it is really important to show that," after he added that it is very cool and that he feels humbled that Tony Hawk invited him to be part of THPS, to him, it was like achieving a goal in his life.

Leo is not the only one who felt honored, to Chad Muska THPS was a huge influence in his life, and to him, it is an opportunity to continue developing the skateboarding industry and introducing it to the masses. “So this game culturally developed a generation, I look forward to seeing what the impact and response to this game coming back is, I know and I’m excited about it," Muska said at THPS.

The consequence of this video game has been that a lot of people starting to skate because of it, 20 years ago until now, the new generations are coming for skateboarding and will bring skateboarding to the top again.

“I would like the game to motivate kids to want to go get a board and learn how to skate,” said Nyjah Huston. To Nyjah skateboarding is his whole life, which means that he is always going to care about everything that will improve our community and bring new riders to it.

For those who weren't born when THPS launched its first edition, it will be awesome to see this legacy. They will have the chance to see everything in a way that the old ones never did before. “It’s great to see it remastered so that the new generation can get that feeling that we had way back," Bob Burnquist said at THPS.

I think that the most significant message from the entire skateboarder's list in the videogame was Rodney Mullen's answer to THPS. Mullen is one of the most important skaters, like Hawk, in our entire skateboarding history and he has also been the first character of this game.

"Some 20 years ago, he nonchalantly asked me to be in his game (THPS2) while finishing lunch at CA Pizza Kitchen. I never would’ve imagined the impact it would make," Mullen said on his Instagram account. He added that, "A couple of years ago I heard rumors of a secret project; next thing I knew, Tony brought us back together. Man, just seeing Kareem again… Then Muska, Bob, Elisa, Rowley—EVERYONE. What an honor it’s been to be part of this, for all these years."

Likewise, Rodney exclaimed that no one has given more to skateboarding than Tony Hawk. "We were both in Bones Brigade as kids, so I’ve witnessed the insane tempo of his progression up-close since I was 14. While we shared many experiences, Tony’s flown to heights that none of us have reached; all the while, he’s remained the same—humble and loyal to his friends," said this iconic skateboarder to Tony.

You will find the videogame on its official website or other platforms like Amazon. THPS 1+2 is available to PS4 and XBOX One. It is a special version that brings the old experiences back to an amazing videogame format, where you will skate with a better resolution, new tricks, characters, even the music playlist is nuts. So don't miss the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2!.
