By Valentina Diaz

There are quite the differences in music preferences among the skateboarders of the world. But no matter what, there have always been some types of music that most characterizes skateboarding in all of it's expressions.

Music inspires a skater when he just wants to concentrate and make that difficult trick, it makes you focus either it's through Hip-hop, Trap or Punk music. Maybe some of these are considered opposites genres, but in skateboarding, nobody really cares what you listen to if it will help you land the trick.

Maybe in the past the type of music you prefer could divide you and the scene of the time, but now people accept the differences that exists between us, which solidifes skaters as a group and makes people support eachother. Music is individual and you will be surprised to see what would you find out there.

Turbonegro is a Norwegian punk rock band, since 1989 to today it's a huge international band in it's genre. The band evolved through sounds that mixed punk, hard rock, and glam; they have more than 10 albums, each of them with a different record company but all maintaining their essence.

The band is composed of Duke of Nothing as the voice, Happy Tom on the bass, Euroboy as the lead guitar, Rune Rebellion on the rhythm guitar, Tommy Manboy on drums, and Crown Prince Haakon on the keyboard. But they have had more than 10 members through their history.

Their first album was Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives in 1992, followed by Helta Skelta in 1993, Never is Forever in 1994, Ass Cobra in 1996 and my favorite Apocalypse Dude in 1998. Those albums are characterized by their crazy songs where they're sharing different feelings and situations.

In the new millennium, they came with an experimental phase to their music. Turbonegro launched Scandinavian Leather in 2003 followed by the 2005 album Party Animals, a rhythmical piece, perfect to skate to or enjoy anywhere.

In 2007 came Retox which revived their punk sounds. Finally, its most recent albums, Sexual Harassment in 2012 and Rock’n Roll Machine in 2018 both heavily involved in the rock genre, but also has some synthesizer sprinkled in to make this hybrid death punk on steroids.

Recognition and Projects

They have played with great artists like Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Helloween, Kreator, Rise Against, NOFX, Bullet for my Valentine, Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Religion and many more.

They also have been working in their own beer brand called Turbopils, a beer of 4.7% alcohol sold at their different concert and in stores around Scandinavia. It's brand message, "Good taste, good time, good head" is the symbol of sharing a beer with people who enjoy the same music tastes and love to get drunk, the beer is also highlighting a different style than a traditional beer.

SHIT®️ has a collaboration with this amazing band as well, with decks with the snake of Apocalypse Dudes album and one celebrating their 30 years on the shred. Both are conserving the style of what we call Skate Punk and we are preparing more goodies for the future as the good death-punk vibes flow.

They've won differents awards with their music, like best rock album, best live band and best Norwegian artist. Untill this date, you can find Turbonegro on different digital platforms like Spotify, iTunes, Instagram, Youtube, and their own web pages.

Experiencing the Connection Between Turbonegro and Skateboarding

Through the years, we have seen how skateboarding is more than just skate and how most of its expressions are inside of the music and the musicians who support it. That’s why I asked a punk rock loving journalist friend of mine for their opinion as well:

“Comparing the style of skate punk bands like Sum 41, NOFX, Minor Threat, Blink 182, etc, we see that Turbonegro doesn’t focus their style on the guitar solos, it doesn’t have a too melodic content like many others have, but the combination between punk, hard rock and glam make of their work really flashy”. says Camilo Álvarez, musical journalist from Garage Podcast.

He also added, “We could say that because of the experimental sounds they've got a hella nice sound mixing everything”. Turbonegro's sound is a special combination and represents their genre in the best way.

It has special hard rock, punk, and classic songs including new instruments to get new results, this makes Turbonegro a complete band for different tastes. A good beat that is a good complement to skate, without it mattering where you are.

Turbonegro represents the perfect beat to skate with lots of its songs in albums like Apocalypse Dude, Party Animals and Retox.

We're always going to recognize the discipline, hard work behind this band. Thank you guys for your brilliant 30 dirty years doing this. We can't wait to hear what's next, while we relisten again, and again, and again.
