How to Play BATB With Your Friends

By Andres Pachon

A. Pachon, a journalist and skateboard addict, is a full-time writer for SHIT® Magazine.

Ready to have fun Mr./Mrs. Pro? What about throwin a little challenge against some of your friends? Here are the rules:

“Battle at the Berrics is a slightly updated version of the Game of SKATE held at the Berrics in Los Angeles. Their rules are: Flat ground only, but that does not mean everything on flat ground counts. No feet on the ground. That means no no complys, no hand plants, no bonelesses, no grabs, and no "malto manual bullshit". No doing tricks that slide on the ground if your opponent popped their trick. Last letter gets two tries. Offensive toe drag gets one do over. Defensive toe drag has a bigger margin of error but will ultimately be decided by the referee. If the trick doer does not pop the trick but still landed, the trick still counts.”

Bring Your Best Skate Tricks

You have been practicing for a while, all those hours of hard work need to be paid, show to your friends all those Nollie Heellips, Shwithc Heelflips, Nollie Backside 180 Heelflips, 360 flips, Hardflips, Varial Heelflips, Nollie Bigspins or any other crazy stuff that you have under your slip.

Astonish Your Opponents

Guess what? You opponents have been practicing too, no matter what you do they are keeping on, it is time to bring the heavy stuff, perhaps a 360 flip or a Nollie Kickflip will do the trick this time. It could be a double-edged sword, but the harder the trick is the more chances you have to beat them, so don’t be cheap on your tricks and show your best skills, otherwise you won´t be the winner this time.

Time to Show Up With Your BATB Skills

Congratulations! You won! You are the ruler in town. Great for you, but don´t be too cocky, next time your opponents will get better, so keep practicing yourself or the next time you will lose that shiny crown. Most important of all, always respect your opponents. Remember that the skateboarding community is all about respect, partnership and having tons of fun.

Believe in Yourself

Don´t worry if you loose this time, of course rivalry and the will to win is essential for any sport, but so is having a great time, so don´t be too hard on yourself if you didn´t win this time, next time will be your chance to be Mr. or Mrs. Big shot. Keep practicing, you will always have the possibility to become a better skater. Remember that this was for fun, once the game has ended go back home, after any game or competition you will be a better skater and also might have known new people which is also great!

BATB and Other Games

Practicing with friends or people you have just meet is a great way to become a pro (become a pro, link to how to become a pro article), you and anybody that has the guts to try it could make it, surely it will take a lot of hard work, hundreds of practice hours and a few falls but don’t be afraid to try. Maybe we can get to see you at the BATTLE AT THE BERRICS in a few years.
