Grinding once a day keeps skateboarders on the rail. It’s a classic trick that even muggles can identify from miles away and training you can’t skip. Any city or town furniture with a surface and edges has the potential of becoming a skateboarding rail. But suppose you live in the countryside or you just lack any kind of rail near you. What to do? You make one all by yourself, of course! All you need is three kind of materials and one single multitask tool and you’re ready to go. Fasten your seatbelt.
Screw The Three-Way Triangle Triad T
Get yourself three pieces of pine struts: two of them should be of 35x90x2400mm (smaller) and one of 35x170x2400mm (bigger). Get a steel tube of 50 – 60mm with a diameter of 2400mm and two pieces of structural ply of 12x185x2400mm. If you get your hands on these and on a drill and some screws, you’re perfectly good to go. It’ll be like Tetris and IKEA, but simpler.
Take the two smaller pieces of pine struts and arrange them in the shape of a ‘T’: that’s one standing vertically and the other above it horizontally. Proceed to screw the far end corners first and then screw it along the central segment.
Once you got your T has one single unit, put it upside down and then put the bigger pine strut beneath it; center it as much as you can, must be symmetric at its sides. Then screw it from above in the horizontal small strut. Before you know it, you will have this kind of pyramid shaped figure.
The pyramid will then create four angles on its base, that’s when you lean the two pieces of ply against the vertex and base of the structure; think of it as shielding it. Now the pyramid has to look more like an actual pyramid. Don’t forget to screw the plies as much as you can along its edges.
Once you’re done with that all that’s left is the steel pipe to put on top of it. The area along the surface should fit almost perfectly for the pipe to be placed. Screw the pipe tight and secure.
And that’s pretty much it! Your own handcrafted skateboarding rail is ready for you to grind at will. You can customize it, paint and garnish it as much as you like. Treasure it well and take it outside once in a while.
